Village Boards, Committees & Commissions


Applications for citizen appointments to Village of Frankfort Boards, Commissions and Committees are typically submitted by April. With the advice and consent of the Trustees, the Mayor typically makes the appointments by early May. Citizens who are interested in serving should obtain applications from the Village Administration Building at 432 W. Nebraska Street or download the application HERE.


Village of Frankfort Committees


Land Use & Policy

The Land Use & Policy Committee consists of the Mayor, Trustees (one as chairperson), and appointed community members. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 5-6 times per year. The Committee reports directly to the Village Board and offers recommendations to the board about issues pertaining to land use (annexation/zoning) and village policy.

Community Services

The Community Services Committee consists of the Mayor, Trustees (one as chairperson), and appointed community members. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 5-6 times per year. The Committee reports directly to the Village Board and offers recommendations to the Village Board about community events and programs.

Operations

The Operations Committee consists of the Mayor, Trustees (one as chairperson),and appointed community members. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 8-10 times per year. The Committee reports directly to the Village Board and offers recommendations to the board about capital equipment expenditures, infrastructure related projects, and Public Works/Utility related initiatives.

Economic Development

The Economic Development Committee consists of the Mayor, Trustees (one as chairperson),and appointed community members. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 3-4 times per year. The Committee reports directly to the Village Board and offers recommendations to the Board about economic development initiatives and programs.

Financial Affairs

The Financial Affairs Committee consists of the Mayor, Trustees (one as chairperson), Treasurer and appointed community members. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 3-4 times per year. The Committee reports directly to the Village Board and offers recommendations to the board about the budget, audit and other financial matters.

Traffic Advisory

The Traffic Advisory Committee consists of staff personnel. The Committee provides recommendations to the Departmental Operations Committee about traffic-related issues. There are no citizen volunteers on this board.

Tree Board

The Tree Board consists of five appointed community members serving staggered three-year terms. It meets on an as needed basis, typically 1-2 times per year. The board provides recommendations to the Operations Committee about appropriate planting species and tree maintenance in the village.


Village of Frankfort Boards/Commissions


Plan Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals

The Plan Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals is created by state law. The Mayor appoints the seven member commission with the advice and consent of the Trustees. The Mayor designates one person as the chairperson. The Commission meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of every month. Commissioners review planning related issues such as rezoning, variance, special use, PUD (Planned Unit Development) and subdivision requests. When required, they hold public hearings on those issues.

Historic Preservation Commission

The Historic Preservation Commission consists of five appointed community members who serve staggered three-year terms. It meets on an as needed basis, but at least 4 times per year. The commission is charged with administering the Village's historic preservation ordinance, reports to the Village Board or Plan Commission and offers recommendations about historic districts, landmarks, and the appearance of development in the historic district (H-1/Downtown). In the past, the commission has been referred to as the 1890's Theme Committee.

Board of Fire and Police Commissioners

The Board of Fire and Police Commissioners is created by state law. The Mayor appoints the three members, one of which is designated as the chairperson. The Commissioners meet as needed, about 10-12 times per year. The Commissioners have the authority to hire, fire and discipline police officers.

Frankfort Police Pension Board

The Frankfort Police Pension Board is created by state law. The Police Pension Board consists of two elected police officer representatives, one retiree representative, and two community members appointed by the Mayor. The Board meets on a quarterly basis. The Board is responsible for managing the police department pension fund.

911 Board

A member of the Village Board may be appointed to serve as the Frankfort representative on the Lincoln-Way 911 board.
